Estonian Grandmaster Paul Keres was one of the greatest personalities in the history of chess. He frist received world-wide appreciation in 1935, when playing in the Warsaw Olympiad. He was one of the top scorers there. At the age of 22 he came first in the AVRO tournament. Keres could never become World Champion. Nevertheless, he was considered as one of the most promising candidates between 1937 and the middle of the sixties. Apart from lesser events, he won 34 tournaments. Keres also wrote several Opening books and a book of Endings. He composed 180 problems and 30 studies.
