Original correspondence chess postcard sent by Hungarian master Janos Balogh from Budapest to Ferdinand Krticka (Kladno, Czechoslovakia). Dated June 28, 1949, with Budapest postmark and original stamp. The reverse bears a typed chess move, the note "Time: 1 day.", and Balogh's original signature.
Janos Balogh (1892–1980) was a Hungarian–Romanian chess master. He won the Romanian Championship in 1930 and represented Romania at three Chess Olympiads – in 1928, 1930, and 1931. He also took part in two unofficial Chess Olympiads, representing Romania in 1926 and Hungary in 1936, when the Hungarian team won the tournament.
Balogh was also active in correspondence chess, where he achieved notable success: he was awarded the title of International Master of Correspondence Chess in 1953 and later won the 1960–1962 Hungarian Correspondence Chess Championship.
An opening is also named after him, the so-called Balogh Defence (1.e4 d6 2.d4 f5).
Ferdinand Krticka (1892–1951) was a Czech chess master. He won the main tournament of the national championship held in Pardubice in 1923. He was also active in correspondence chess and problem chess.
