"The interested reader should be informed right at the start that he is reading neither a tournament description nor a chess book in the usual sense. Of course he will find all the games played in the tournament recorded and commented on in detail.
Grandmaster O'Kelly, the referee of this tournament, has taken on this task. His name guarantees that the sometimes very interesting games will be given appropriate recognition and will provide chess fans with inspiration.
A chess tournament is contested, prepared and organized by people and, not least, paid for.
We will also report on these people, not just the grandmasters but also everyone involved. You will find little stories, short portraits, but also impressive tales. Not only pleasant stories, there was also a Pachman case. The Solingen Chess Society came under political fire in 1868. The big show was on everyone's lips. The actors changed. Everyone who plays a role in international chess acted on the stage.
The tournament had a reason. The host city, the city of Solingen, is celebrating its 600th anniversary. That is reason enough for us to present the host city. We have saved ourselves the trouble of doing our own local research. We found the publication "220,000 days of the city" so good for this purpose that we have adopted large sections of it with the city's consent. For this too, we would like to thank our city.
Finally, we would like to thank the selfless and active helpers of the tournament and this book: in particular the chess friends W. Happe and Gerd Butzeck as "demonstrators", the Schmitz couple as self-sacrificing cashiers, Mr. Lutz Ebbinghaus as tournament director of the side, but also all the unnamed club members who pitched in without hesitation when the need arose.
I hope that this book not only reports on events, but shows that chess players are people too".
