H. J. R. Murray: A Short History of Chess (1963).
Betts: Written by Murray in 1917 and found in typescript among his papers after his death in 1955. It is not a digest or abridgement of his standard 'History' but an original work with a different approach and different aims. Murray's text traces the history up to 1866, additional chapters by Goulding Brown and Golombek continue it to 1945 and post-1945 respectively. Includes games and positions from ancient and modern forms of chess.
