Biography and 40 selected games of GM Jan Smejkal against top players. All games are annotated in detail, with analyses by Grandmasters Eliska Richtrova, Vlastimil Babula and Jiri Stocek.
Jan Smejkal, born in 1946, a player with a refined positional style, belongs to a strong generation of Czechoslovak players born at the end of the war or shortly after it (Hort, Kavalek, Jansa, Plachetka). Smejkal was 3x champion of Czechoslovakia, in the 70s he was one of the best players in the world. He only narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates' Tournament at the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal. He won agains two world champions, Petrosian and Smyslov.
Smejkal has represented at 10 chess Olympiads. In Lucerne 1982, where Czechoslovakia won the silver medal, he contributed significantly to this success by scoring 10 points from 14 games. Foreword by Lubomir Ftacnik, index of players. Only 400 copies were printed (confirmed by publisher), but this fact is not stated in the book.
