Ceska Lipa (Czechia) 1952

Tournament in honor of Oldrich Duras' 70th birthday

Good or better: light/some signs of use, some writings on the back.

This was national tournament, 10 players round robin. The winner was master Ladislav Alster 8 of 9 ahead of Lukes 7/9, master Josef Hasek etc.

 

Ladislav Alster, the winner of the tournament, is standing in front of the wall chessboard (the tallest one, with glasses). The jubilant Oldrich Duras (he did not participate) is sitting in front in the middle of the table.

 

Biographical data:

Oldrich Duras (1882-1957) was one of the strongest Czech chess players of all time, he belonged to the world’s best players in early 20th century. Several times Czech champion, shared winner in tournaments Barmen 1905 (with A. Rubinstein), Vienna 1908 (with Maroczy and Schlechter), Prague 1908 (with Schlechter), Breslau 1912 (with Rubinstein), etc. His last tournament was Mannheim 1914, then Duras never came back to the tournament chess after the world war.

Ladislav Alster (1927-1991), Czechoslovak champion in 1956, a member of team which won world student championship in Oslo 1954, took part in chess olympiad Moscow 1956.
